Southern Regional Center, Christchurch

NZMS launched a new Southern Regional digitisation centre, based in Christchurch on 9 February 2012, celebrating with friends from the Canterbury heritage sector. Since then we have been delighted by the support and encouragement we’ve received from the Canterbury community. The Centre is run by Christchurch locals, Southern Regional Manager, Jo Condon and Digitisation technician, Katie Wilson.

Jo and Katie’s first job was to put the Lanovia CS-550 to work scanning a collection of over 1000 lantern slides and glass negatives for ECAN featuring a number of images of the historic Port of Lyttelton in its earlier days. The Cruse CS80 book cradle scanner will be used to digitise ECAN’s historic photograph albums. The month of March was a busy one, with Katie based onsite at Radio New Zealand Sound Archives, barcoding collections and scanning supporting papers as part of Sound Archives’ ongoing earthquake recovery process.

The Southern Center is equipped to handle a range of digitisation requirements and the team are excited about the potential to respond to Canterbury’s unique situation.  We want to be flexible in providing what is needed to our community.
