Strategies to Enhance Online Collection Access

Date: Thursday, 4th April, 2024

Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm

Sharing library and archive collections online is the first step towards creating an inviting and accessible space for research and engagement. The next challenge lies in ensuring your stakeholders can easily locate the information they need.

Over 125 diverse organisations around the world have now chosen Recollect as their online community engagement platform. In this webinar, NZMS explores how some of these groups have configured their sites using Recollect’s creative technology to invite discovery and facilitate better access to digital collections.

The webinar is designed for librarians and information professionals seeking to optimise the online user experience for their patrons. Key topics will include implementing bilingual interfaces, identifying your users, the use of way-finding signposts, and addressing cultural sensitivities.

It will provide a unique opportunity to obtain first-hand insights from organisations using Recollect in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas. They will each share valuable advice for creating more accessible and user-focused collections.

The Speakers

Jennifer Birnel, Director of Montana History Portal

The Montana History Portal is facilitated by the Montana State Library and was established to provide a free online platform for contributing organisations to share their history, providing an interesting model when considering community engagement.

Contributing institutions include libraries, museums, archives, and historical societies. The site features both historical and contemporary items, supporting a range of activities including education, research, and personal interest.

Jennifer Birnel has a Master of Education degree, a BS in Middle Grades Education, and BA in Organizational Communications. She taught middle school language arts and social studies for 12 years. She was hired by the State Library in 2011 as a technology trainer. In 2013 she became the Montana History Portal Director for the Montana State Library.

Watch the Recording

It was fantastic to see such a great turnout for our webinar, Strategies to Enhance Online Collection Access!

The session explored how two very different organisations use Recollect to work directly with their stakeholders by creating separate online collection spaces and facilitating appropriate access permissions.

Key topics included:

  • Approaches for managing access to knowledge and collections for public versus private stakeholder groups
  • The use of Single Sign On (SSO) functionality to assign permissions, which enables stakeholders to manage access to their own content
  • Tackling metadata consistency when working with community groups in a public library context
