It's been a busy three days.
On Monday we moved all the equipment over to the new location and set to work on reassembly of the Cruse.
Ably assisted by Nigel Roper from our Digi Unit and Russell Thompson from Specialist Repairs we spent a day aligning every aspect of the Cruse scanner at the new location, ensuring that everything was straight in the new location.
Next we set to testing and recalibrating the focus of the camera. To do this we set the focus with the camera head at the top of the column, the middle and the end of the column, using special software which ships with the machine, and special MTF calibration charts. This software uses the information we create from our focus calibrations to create a database which stores a "focus curve" for the camera for each type of mode we wish to use.
After that we start calibration to determine the lightest and darkest image we are likely to get on the camera, and we do a series of scans (which take over 48 hours!) to ensure that we take into account the effect of the lighting over the entire scan bed at all magnifications we are likely to use in digitising.
Finally we create custom .icc profiles to ensure the closest possible replication of originals - a huge task but definitely worth it to get the fantastic results we love off this machine.
